Annual Goal Setting for 2023

I enjoy writing down goals for myself each year and have done so for the past twenty years. Many times I write my annual goals in whatever generic spiral notebook I happen to be using at that time, and my list for that given year eventually gets lost in the shuffle. Some years I have the foresight to either scan a copy of my goals into my computer, or I think to tear the pages out of the notebook and add them to a manila folder in the file cabinet. But as far as I can tell, there’s nothing special about the lists that I’ve kept over the years in comparison to the ones that have gone missing.

People have asked why I enjoy this exercise so much and it is mostly based on the results. The simple act of writing my goals very commonly results in me achieving those goals. Even when I think that I have completely forgotten what I wrote down, somewhere in my subconscious it is remembered and in reflection at year’s end I learn that I’ve accomplished more off the list than I thought. This on its own has encouraged me to continue the annual tradition year after year. But now I include my wife and my two sons in the goal writing session, and this has added another layer of enjoyment to the task that I genuinely cherish.

This year my work oriented goals are simple and represent a “back to basics” approach to real estate. They are inspired by conversations I had throughout 2022 with fellow agents that had come to me for advice as the market transitioned from what it was towards the beginning of last year to what it became at the end of last year. I plan on approaching 2023 with the same enthusiasm and hunger as I did twenty years ago when I first started down this career path. To engage as if I were a brand new agent, while still benefitting from the 20 years of real estate experience I have in my head. I know that 2023 is going to be tough sledding, but I’m excited to meet the challenge head on and later reflect at year’s end on whether or not I accomplished my work-themed goals.

My personal life goals are simple as well. No matter how good of a husband, father and friend I think that I may be, I feel that those are things that can constantly be improved upon. In 2023, I have written goals to be active, present, and loving for my wife and for my two sons. I want to make a more conscious effort to spend time with extended family and friends. And I want to do my best to maintain a healthier diet throughout the entire year.

In all, I am starting the year off with 11 written goals. Five are work related, six are personal related. Once accomplished, I will be looking back at a fulfilling 2023 that resulted in a happier, healthier, and more accomplished me. What about you, do you enjoy setting written goals for yourself? If so and you’re up to it, message me what some of yours are for the year to come. I’d love to hear from you!
